Employment Experience

Design Engineer, Hatch 3D, June 2015 - April 2016

Employed at a Harrisonburg start-up company specializing in 3D printing, 3D design and 3D scanning.  I worked as the lead Design Engineer with various responsibilities from maintaining printers to designing objects for clients of various backgrounds.  My design work includes creating prototypes for local entrepreneurs, recreating discontinued parts, or one off parts for clients.  Examples of these can be seen in the Hatch3D Projects section of this site.  Being a small enterprise, only four employees, I was tasked with the responsibility of completing the projects given to me with limited resources while meeting customer requirements.  Because of this I gained a very well rounded experience in running a business and thoroughly utilizing the tools available to me.  At the shop I ran and maintained the shops six printers, enabling me to gain a very throrough understanding of the FDM and stereolithography printing proccesses.  Additionally I used a Structure Sensor and an iPad Mini to take scans of various people to be later printed at a 1/15th scale full color sandstone model.

Guest Teacher, JMU X-Labs, February 2016 - April 2016

During my time with Hatch3D, I was constantly looking for ways to spread my knowledge about 3D design and printing, while also giving back to the community I lived in for the past five years.  Eventually I got in contact with Timothy Moore, who worked at the JMU X-Labs and asked me to come in to teach a 3D design and 3D printing classes.  The school hosted classes every Tuesday night, called Pop-Up classes from things such as glass blowing to programming.  I taught a number of the classes, guiding the students (both community members and JMU students) through the 3D design process and eventually the printing of the parts they had designed.

Teacher's Assistant, Rapid Prototyping Room, August 2013 - December 2014

During my Rapid Prototyping class, I worked as a TA in James Madison's 3D printing room, during regular school hours.  I would help other students from various majors properly use the lab's many different 3D printers and fine tune their computer models to enable better printing.  In the lab, there are two UP! printers, two MakerBot Replicators, a Object30 Pro, a Stratasys Dimension 1200es, and a Stratasys Dimension Elite.  During this time, I was able to gain a much more hands on experience with the 3D printers, rather than just superficial use.

Intern, Andros North America, May 2014 - August 2014

Worked under the guidance of Mr. Jamie Dodson, Head of Facilities Management, I worked to modernize the collection of blueprints and engineering drawing of various large buildings, as large as a 120,000 sq. ft, on the company’s property.  Using the full 2014 AutoCAD suite, I created or finished drawings of two production facilities, one cold storage facility, and a comprehensive facility plot that included all the buildings and above or underground utilities.  I did this using a combination of field measurements and satellite images.  The internship taught me what a real work environment would be like and allowed me to work with teams to accomplish my tasks.
